More about me

Tom Curtis BA (Hons), Grad. Dip. Couns.

I grew up in the UK and was a journalist before I moved to Australia in 2004. I then worked in conservation, but also developed a parallel interest in psychotherapy by being a therapy client. I've had my own struggles with anxiety, so I know what's it like, and I know what it's like to sit in the client's chair. I retrained as a counsellor and then worked for the Anglicare counselling service in Mackay from 2016 to 2022. I now see clients at The Grendon Rooms in North Mackay. I have what I'd describe as a "highly tolerant curiosity" about people and their life stories, I'm down-to-earth, easy to talk to and have a strong sense of humour! I like working in-depth with my clients on the root causes of their difficulties, which can take some time, but I'm also happy to see people for short-duration therapy.

What sort of therapy?

I integrate elements of several psychotherapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-focused Therapy, and Person-centred Counselling. The research on counselling effectiveness is clear, though, that the most important factor among those that can be controlled is the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client. That is also a primary focus of mine, therefore.
